About this Course

Scottish Gaelic is an endangered language with a long history in Alberta. Many local place names - such as Glenmore (from gleann mòr, meaning 'big valley'), Canmore (from ceann mòr, meaning 'big head'), Glendeer (from gleann doire, meaning 'grove valley'), Airdrie (from Àird Rìgh, meaning King's Heights), and even Calgary itself (from caladh gàraidh, meaning 'garden harbor') - come originally from Gaelic, and they took root in Alberta because of the large numbers of Gaelic-speakers who arrived here from Scotland in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
